Funeral Poems : The Lovely Bud (Funeral Poem for a Child)
The lovely bud, so young, so fair
Called off by earthly doom,
Just came to show how sweet a flower
In paradise could bloom

This poem was seen on a gravestone at St. Phillip's Episcopal Church on Church Street (in the "transient" graveyard across the street from the church), Charleston, S.C. The grave is of an infant girl and features a statue of a young lamb sleeping on top the engraving. The stone reads:
OUR LITTLE JULIA
Died April 24th 1861
Aged 1 Year, 6 Months
And 24 Days
This lovely bud so young and fair
Called hence by early doom
Just came to show how sweet a flower
In Paradise would bloom.
