Suicide

Funeral Poems : Suicide Poems

Funeral poems for suicide victim.

If someone has committed suicide, it is always difficult to know what to say.

This poem has been written as a funeral poem for someone who has committed suicide.

Funeral Poem - Suicide Poems:

No one knew the torment,
That you were going through;
We only kept on seeing
What we really wanted to.

We saw the outward smile,
But not your inner pain;
We never really dreamt,
That you would never smile again.

Forgive us if we failed to see,
What we could do to aid;
Or if we failed to comprehend,
How much you were afraid.

We pray your mental anguish,
Will now forever cease;
And that your deep anxieties,
Will be replaced by peace.

We know your pain invaded,
Every single thought you had;
It made you cry internally,
And deeply, deeply sad.

But we in turn remember,
The good times, not the bad;
We remember when you smiled at us,
And not when you were sad.

So when we think about your life,
We won't dwell upon its close;
We'll remember all the good times,
And forget about life's blows.

We'll remember all the happiness,
The joy and not the tears;
The assurance and the confidence,
And not irrational fears.

Our lives have all been better,
Because you have been there;
So now we leave your memory,
In God's all-loving care.

My Son took his life 13 years

My Son took his life 13 years ago your thoughtful words would have comforted and helped us immensely at the time . I hope you don't mind I have copied your poem and along with a photo of Ray and framed them . It inspires and brings everyone to tears who reads it ..... Thank You

Webmaster Edit: Dick doesn't mind at all. He'd like his name to be on the poem so that those who view it know who the poem is, but if this detracts from the memorial photo then he quite understands if you want to leave his name off. The important thing from Dick's point of view is that you have found comfort from using his poem.

My daughter aged 50 died in 2009.

The verdict from the Coroner was 'She took her own life whilst suffering a depressive illness.' I was able to speak at my daughter's funeral. Your poem was given to me last week, 3rd April. How apt - I feel it would have helped the family back in 2009 and therefore will help other family members should they find themselves in such a devasting situation as we all found ourselves. I still burst into tears when I read - We never really dreamt, That you would never smile again. - Your poem says it all. Thank you. Kathy Upex

One of my best friends killed

One of my best friends killed himself a month ago. This poem described him exactly. He was always happy and smiling on the outside. It was really hard for me and all his other friends. I was with him the night before he did it and I didn't really say goodbye when I left. I have been having a constant battle with myself for a while about what I could have done, even though the answer is nothing. Thank you so much for writing this. It has helped me emotionally. It really is beautiful. Thanks again.

Thank you

I lost a friend who's funeral was on friday - this said exactly what i wanted to say however i was not able to read it aloud, i had passed it between a few friends who told me i should add this to his 'in memory' site which i have today as the printed copy i had has been such huge comfort to many people i can only hope that it speaks to more people. Thank you for writing this, you have no idea how many of my friends you have helped with your words and how much you have helped me. Thank you x

My nephew's only daughter committed suicide and I am trying to find the appropriate words to say during the services and I ran across this wonderful poem that fully describes everything I wanted to say. My heartfelt thanks for sharing this beautiful poem.

Hi Richard,

Hi Richard,
I am a Civil Celebrant and would like to ask if I could use your poem in a service I am doing for a friend that has passed and has no family to speak of. It would be very appropriate if I could. Your poem is so lovely. My Twin Brother also took his own life I wish I could have thought of the right words to say then . Thanks Sandy :)

REPLY FROM RICHARD:
Yes, sandy, anyone is welcome to use it at any funeral, and I hope it helps. If it is actually going to be printed on an order of service could you please insert the following under the poem - © (2008) Dick Underwood. Copied from www.funeral-poems.net website with permission.

Thank you For The 'Suicide' Poem

I would just like to thank you for allowing me to use your poem. It was not printed on a order of service. But it was very helpfull as no one seemed to know what to say and your poem just said it all. A friend of mine was there and she is a retired celebrant and thought it was the nicest poem she had heard. So thanks again so much.
Sandy :)

Please excuse me. I find your poem moving & beautiful.
I lost my sister to an illness a # of years ago.
Now my sister has lost her life due to her "black dog feelings"
Your words in the poem inspire me & wondered if I may adopt them somehow in my speech at her final blessing?
Peace & harmony,
LP x
