Funeral Poems : You Can Shed Tears
You can shed tears that she is gone
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she's gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

I conduct funerals, and over
I conduct funerals, and over the years have found that it is very helpful to families to change the 'or' at the beginning of lines 2 and 6 to 'and'. This is because it is perfectly valid to hold two or more apparently contradictory feelings without them being mutually exclusive. By adapting the words in this way it helps people to be more compassionate and understanding towards themselves, not being 'wrong' to experience their own grief for their loss.
Thanks Daphne. A welcome
Thanks Daphne. A welcome reminder that none of the poems are set in stone. Many of the poems may benefit from being tweaked to fit the needs of those who are bereaved.
'You Can Shed Tears Poem - Wow!
Being a 7th grader, it means to write a lot and find poems/stories that spark your inspiration. For one, this is my favorite poem of all time. I honestly think for the last line: smile, open your eyes, love and go on. I would add, go on and on. I don't know, it sounds more finished. Other than that, amazing piece of work. :)
