The old photograph's a held moment
our glance that time cannot erase
In the art of sunshine we effloresced
until the weather changed to drought.

Laughing spills on a tormented land
turned a frozen hail and caused a tidal flood.
Yellow flowers returned their decaying petals
and lay upon the fragile day's end.

Blue wave crests in a rolling tumble
roared into the pressing onrushed valley
to fill the shore's inner bled caves.
Now the blown shoreline changes
move my body in unwanted rhythms.

Drawn To A Close

Over many decades I have done a lot of living
I have known many people and done a lot of giving.
Even though I am gone, I’m in a better place,
At some point I hope I put a smile on your face.

God has watched over me after all these years,
So please don’t shed any unnecessary tears.
I am now in heaven standing by God’s side,
I feel that I am home in this place I now reside.

My time on this earth is done and my life has passed,
But hopefully during my years I made memories that last.
Even though my life is over, there’s no reason to grieve,
There comes a time for everyone when we have to leave.

I’ve spent my time on earth and shared a lot of love,
But now I will be watching over you from high above.
I’ve lived a long and full life, I left no tasks undone,
My life has drawn to a close like the setting sun.

The Mind Is Well

I have written this poem, 'The Mind Is Well', for those celebrating the life of someone whose mind outlived their ailing body.

The mind was sharp
Within its shell,
The body aged … the mind was well.

The print was blurred
They eyes grew dim,
But still the mind
Was bright within.

The legs grew weak
The walking tired,
But still the brain
was fully fired.

The hearing faint,
the ear drums weak,
But in the brain
The cells were sleek.

But the body's mind
Is not alone,
Its cells from blood
And air are grown.

So when the heart
And lungs did fail,
The mind could not
Survive the gale.

And when the storms
Of life had passed,
The brain had sighed
And thought its last.

The mind, the brain,
The cells all gone.
But in our minds
They will live on.

Our thoughts are yours,
And yours are ours,
So you'll be with us
All our hours.

So you'll live on,
And here is how.
Your mind has gone
Eternal now.

You're in our thoughts
And in our minds,
And as we age
So you will find.

Our mind is sharp
within its shell,
Our bodies age … our minds are well

Waiting at The Door

Waiting at the door, a funeral poem for someone who died in old age, by Tullius Clinton O'Kane.

I am waiting for the master,
Who will bid me rise and come,
To the glory of his presence,
To the gladness of his home.

Many a weary path I've travelled,
In the darkest storm and strife,
Bearing many a heavy burden,
Often struggling for my life.

Many friends that travelled with me,
Reached that portal long ago;
One by one they left me battling,
With the dark and crafty foe.

Yes, their pilgrimage was shorter,
And their triumphs sooner won;
Oh, how lovingly they'll greet me,
When the toils of life are done.

Yet, O Lord, I wait thy pleasure,
For thy times and ways are best;
Hear me, Lord, for I am weary;
O my Father, bid me rest.

They are watching at the portal,

All the loved ones gone before.

or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.

Your heart can be empty because you can't see her
or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she's gone
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
or you can do what she'd want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
