The flowers still bloom and the birds are in song,

A country prayer

Dear Lord
Please give momma a bowl of peas to shell
And a soft chair, to sit awhile
So she can check on us from your front porch
And smile her happy smile

She'll want to cook you all some dinner
Or grab a broom and sweep the floor
Then make herself a glass of tea
And ease on out the door

She'll go take a walk, out in your garden
And greet each angel along the way
Then find some shady spot to sit
And watch your children play

She might run across, some of her kin
Or a friend, she ain't seen in years
And give em all, a great big ol hug
And shed some happy tears

They'll be plenty there, for her to do
So we won't worry, in the least
For as long as she is with you Lord
We know that she's at peace

Mama's Hands

Mama's Hands were always busy,
Cleaning, scrubbing, washing clothes,
Making dinner, doing dishes,
Wiping smudges off our nose.

Mama's hands felt like a lead pipe
When they popped us on the head,
Yet gentle as a kitten
When she tucked our frames in bed.

Mama's hands were once so lovely,
Soft and smooth as priceless silk,
Now they're withered, old and haggard;
Age spots splattered like chocolate milk.

Mama's hands that once were busy
Now they lay across her chest,
clutch a hankie and a Bible;
She's crossed Jordan like the rest.

But I know Mama, she's not resting,
She's telling angels what to do;
Maybe now they wished they left her
Here to pester me and you!

It's happened many times and it will happen many more,
A loved one leaves her family, and walks through heaven's door,
Broken hearts are left behind, being strong for one another,
Please tell us lord, how we will cope, without our loving Mother.

Her final day has endeth, her smile we'll see no more,
She lay in peace now resting; our hearts are left all sore,
We wish we'd said more often just how wonderful you are,
Now we must learn to go through life, without our loving Ma.

Loving Mother, Please explain to me,
How to live our lives without maternal company,
Without your motherly affection and your love that was like no other,
Please help us Lord to carry on, without our loving Mother.

Be there for all our children, and guide them as Mum would,

I'll always miss you but I've let you go:

I'll always miss you but I've let you go,
In my broken heart I'll always keep you so,
We shared a special night before you died,
A night that helped me dry the tears I've cried,
You've healed me from your cloud above,
I can't see you now but I'll always feel your love,
The hardest thing was "never ever",
But the memories I have will last forever,
So sleep wee mammy, rest in peace,
Your baby girl is more at ease.

My Mum died on 25th July 2009. As I am the youngest girl of 8 children, she was worried about me and how I'd deal with her death. I didn't deal with it very well until I found a poem in with her insurance documents. It was a well known poem called "Miss me but let me go" (By Betty Miller) and it helped me mentally. This poem I wrote was a kind of reply to the one she left .

Mother Wasn't Perfect

Mother Wasn't Perfect. A funeral poem for a 'Normal Mother'!

When our Mother dies, it's natural to think that they were some sort of a 'Super-mum', but if we're honest, we know that most Mum's aren't perfect, but they do the best they can. I once heard it said that “There is no such thing as a 'Perfect Mother, only one that's 'Good Enough'”

Children don't come with a manual, and often doing the right thing as a parent is only achieved through trial and error. Unfortunately, there's no rehearsal or practise, so it's no wonder that so many parents don't get things perfectly right.

So this funeral poem is for the vast majority of mothers who are far from perfect, but have done the best they could in the circumstances they found themselves in. Thankfully, there are lots of 'Good Enough' Mother's out there, and this poem is for them.

My Mother wasn't perfect,
But she loved me and she cared;
She often made mistakes
And caused me deep despair.

I know it wasn't easy,
And I know she tried her best;
To keep us neat and tidy,
And bright and cleanly dressed.

I'm glad I had a mother,
Who'd seen a bit of life;
Who'd shared the very best of times,
And inner painful strife.

For life is for the living,
And that she surely did;
We didn't see the half of it,
From us the worst she hid.

So no, she wasn't perfect,
But she loved us and she cared;
She did the very best best she could,
And all of us have erred.

For nobody is perfect,
Not her, and no, not me;
We do the very best we can,
And all our love is free.

So in my Mother's memory,
I'll try to live with love;
Knowing that she's looking down,
From heaven up above.

I know I won't be perfect,
But like her, I'll try my best;
To cope with life's misfortunes,
Without becoming stressed.

So thank you, Mum, for being there,
Despite your troubled days;
We'll forget your imperfections,
And remember you always.

Where Have You Gone

A Funeral Poem For Parents

Life, it moved from day to day
I cared for you, what more to say.
One day up, one day down.
Never mind, you'll come around.

I came , I saw, I looked at you
My life on hold, nothing else to do.
I came back home and sat alone
I sat in your chair, I sat by the 'phone.

The house is empty, you're not at home
I call out 'Mam', I'm all alone.
You're somewhere else I cannot be
Though I know you know you're my world to me.

It's early morning when I get the call
You fought many battles, but you can't win them all.
You felt no pain when you fell asleep
I stand by your bed and inside I weep.

I cry for your soul
I cry for your life
I cry for your husband, my father.
I cry for my mother, you, his wife.

I turn around and walk away
You're in heaven now, no more to say.
From what I've heard it ain't all bad
I hope you enjoy being back with dad.

You're looking down with some disfrown
you don't agree, but I'm on my own.
I can't stay here, there's nothing left
So the Canary Islands I think are best.

I'm taking Dad and I'm taking you
One last thing for me to do.
A family holiday, don't you agree
Only this New Year's Eve you'll both be free.

Together at last, it seems so right
I end the year by turning out the light.
You may have gone far, but I feel you near
So for one last time, I wish you both 'Happy New Year'.

I love you both and I always will
but I'm not alone, even though life's up hill.
As you know Mam and you've already told Dad
I'm still down here with the love of a great lad.

I know you're looking down at this space
and someday soon you'll see a smile on my face.
It'll all work out in the end
With the help and support from family and friends

And when I look up
You'll be looking down from above.

Wherever I go, wherever I am
I'll never be far from my Dad or my Mam.
